Infection of the middle ear is the most common type of ear disorder, particularly in children. In adults, another common disorder is otitis externa - which causes inflammation of the outer ear and is also often the result of an infection.
Outer and middle-ear disorders can also be the result of injury, a boil in the ear canal, or a blockage of ear wax. Earache may also be an accompanying symptom of the common cold, tooth decay or other dental problems.
Symptoms
Mild to severe earache
Inflammation of the ear
Discharge of pus from the ear
Slight hearing loss

Consult your doctor
If the pain is severe, see your doctor immediately to determine the cause.
Antibiotics may be prescribed or an antifungal drug if a fungal infection is the cause.

Causes
Otitis externa can be caused by a bacterial, viral or fungal infection. It is quite common among swimmers as moisture in the ear can encourage infection.
Earache can be caused by a blockage of the ear, and is some-times worsened by attempts to clear the ear using a cotton bud as this may push if deeper into the ear canal. Rarely a herpes infection can cause blisters in the ear with persisting pain.
