An inflammation of the lower digestive tract, gastroenteritis has many causes; infection with a virus, bacterium, or parasite; infection of toxic substances; allergy or intolerance to food; and medications, often antibiotics that alter the normal bacterial population of the lower tract. Also, people with eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia, may develop gastroenteritis as a result of laxative abuse.
